June 19 2011 - Motorland Aragon races
A sunny and warm day in Alcaniz for the seventh round of the Superbike world championship and the fourth race of the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup. During the morning warm up, Rolfo had a technical problem and the team worked hard to prepare his bike in time for the first race. After yesterday’s excellent performance Aitchison started from the third row of the grid while Rolfo lined up from the fifth. Race one was unlucky for both Team Pedercini riders. After making a quick start, Aitchison reached tenth position while teammate Rolfo was in fourteenth. Aitchison was fighting for ninth place but towards the end of the race, with worn out tyres, his bike started to slide a lot and Mark unfortunately lost some positions, closing in fifteenth place. Rolfo started to make up positions right from the first few laps but unfortunately in the last lap he run out of fuel and was lucky to be able to end the race fourteenth. In race two both riders made a good start and fought throughout the entire race to reach the points zone. Aitchison reached the twelfth position while Rolfo followed him across the line in thirteenth.
Superbike – race 1: 1) Melandri (Yamaha) – 2) Biaggi (Aprilia) - 3) Camier (Aprilia) – 4) Laverty (Yamaha) – 5) Sykes (Kawasaki)…14) Rolfo (Kawasaki) – 15) Aitchison (Kawasaki)
Superbike – race 2: 1) Biaggi (Aprilia) – 2) Melandri (Yamaha) – 3) Checa (Ducati) – 4) Fabrizio (Suzuki) – 5) Lascorz (Kawasaki) ….. 12) Aitchison (Kawasaki) – 13) Rolfo (Kawasaki)
Roberto Rolfo:“This morning’s warm-up was very important in that we made a big change in terms of bike set-up that proved to be successful, as I was immediately able to make my best lap of the weekend so far. In race one I made a good start and was able to maintain good rhythm for the entire race. I lost positions only at the end when I ran out of fuel. In race two I had to slow down through the corner where other riders had crashed and I lost a lot of positions. Also the tyres became worn very quickly and I had trouble closing in thirteenth. A difficult weekend but an important and positive one. Thanks to the team’s great work and to Andreani’s technicians we now have a valid set-up on which to work and this gives me confidence ahead of the upcoming races.”
Mark Aitchison: “I think overall I can be happy with my two races today. The first started well and I was running as high as tenth before we had some major tyre problems. I lost all grip after about seven laps and could not do any more than I did. In the second race I did not make such a good start, but managed to push my way through a little into eleventh. We
changed the tyres for the second race and even through I did not have the same initial grip at the beginning, I was able to maintain more consistent times. I finished twelfth at the end, but if it were not for a first lap encounter with another rider, where I was pushed off the circuit, maybe we could have done more. In any case I’m happy and I would like to thank my
technicians who have done a wonderful job and supported me so much”.
Third row start for Staring and Mercado and fifth for Bussolotti in today’s Superstock 1000 FIM Cup race at the sunny circuit of Motorland Aragon. During the morning warm up all three riders worked with their team to make final adjustments so as to be ready for the race. All three Pedercini riders made quite a good start to the race. After a few laps Staring was tenth, Mercado fourteenth and Bussolotti followed him in sixteenth place. As the race went on, Staring reached eighth place, Mercado gained one place and Bussolotti remained in the same position. The race ended with Staring in eighth position, Mercado in fourteenth and Bussolotti in sixteenth. Some good points for Staring and Mercado while Bussolotti missed the points zone by just one position.
Superstock 1000 – race: 1) Giugliano (Ducati) – 2) Zanetti (BMW) – 3) Petrucci (Ducati) – 4) Canepa (Ducati) – 5) Barrier (BMW) ….. 8) Staring (Kawasaki) …... 14) Mercado (Kawasaki) …… 16) Bussolotti (Kawasaki)
Marco Bussolotti: “This has been a weekend to forget. I started from the fifth row and I did not find the right feeling with the bike also because, after the problem we had yesterday, my bike set up was not good enough for me to be able to reach the riders in front of me. I want to look forward to the next race in Brno where I hope to obtain a better result”.
Brian Staring: “Not so bad, and not so good. I did the best I could in the race and I improved on my lap time by one second. I’m really only disappointed about yesterday’s qualifying. I was not able to reach a good position on the starting grid and it’s difficult to start from the third row if you want to reach the first positions. Eighth place is not what I wanted but we
improved a little bit and I’m confident for the next race in Brno”.
Leandro “Tati” Mercado: “My start was quick and I was able to recover some positions. During the race I fought in a group of three or four riders but I suffered some chattering problems at the front of the bike and could not obtain a better result. I think it was important to finish the race and to gain some points for the championship standings and I’m sure I’ll be able to do better in the next races".
