May 29 2011 - Miller Motorsports Park Qualifying 2
There was very bad weather and heavy rain today in Salt Lake City for the morning’s World Superbike qualifying session. Roberto Rolfo and Mark Aitchison worked with Pedercini technicians to improve the set-up of their bikes, but due to the difficult track conditions no-one was able to improve on yesterday’s first qualifying lap times. Aitchison (2’11”765) and Rolfo (2’19”316) thus remained in nineteenth and twenty-first position respectively, missing out on a place in the Superpole. In the afternoon’s free practice both riders continued to work hard on machine settings, finding some solutions and some improvements ahead of tomorrow’s 21 lap races. Aitchison reached the seventeenth position (2’07”296) while Rolfo obtained the twentyfirst place (2’10”778, both improving on their best lap times of the morning. Mark will start tomorrow’s races from the fifth row of the grid while Roberto will line up from the sixth.
Superbike qualifying 2: 1) Checa (Ducati) – 2) Camier (Aprilia) - 3) Biaggi (Aprilia) – 4) Sykes (Kawasaki) – 5) Corser (BMW) .. 19) Aitchison (Kawasaki) - 21) Rolfo (Kawasaki)
Superbike free practice 2: 1) Camier (Aprilia) – 2) Corser (BMW) - 3) Smrz (Ducati) – 4) Haslam (BMW) ….. 17) Aitchison (Kawasaki) …… 21) Rolfo (Kawasaki)
Superbike Superpole: 1) Checa (Ducati) – 2) Smrz (Ducati) - 3) Melandri (Yamaha) - 4) Laverty (Yamaha) – 5) Guintoli (Ducati) – 6) Corser (BMW) – 7) Biaggi (Aprilia) – 8) Badovini (BMW)
Roberto Rolfo: “I’m really disappointed with how qualifying practice went. I was unable to improve on my best lap time of yesterday because of the rain. In the afternoon free practice I worked very hard with my team to find a good set up for my Kawasaki on this wet track and we were able to improve the situation. I’m confident ahead of tomorrow’s races even though I know it will be very difficult, starting from the sixth row, but I’m still positive and I’ll try my best to obtain a good result.”
Mark Aitchison: “Today was a very cold and wet day at Miller Park for our second qualifying session. Obviously due to bad weather conditions our lap times did not improve, but I am happy as this was my first real experience of this bike in the wet. During the day I found a consistent feeling with the bike and my team has worked hard to improve my confidence on the bike by working on some small set-up issues. Tomorrow we must focus on improving the grip from the rear of the bike if we have wet conditions again, but I’m looking forward to our races tomorrow regardless of what the weather
brings.”
