May 07 2011 - Monza Qualifying 2

Today was the second day of qualifying for team Pedercini’s Superbike and Superstock 1000 riders at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza in Italy. The Superbike riders Roberto Rolfo and Mark Aitchison had a tough qualifying period, but were still not far from the leaders in terms of their overall best lap times. The morning qualifying session was red flagged due to oil on the track. Both Rolfo and Aitchison improved their best lap times but unfortunately not enough to enter the Superpole. Rolfo (1’44”515) was eighteenth while Aitchison (1’45”022) reached the twentieth position. In the early afternoon’s free practice, both riders worked with their technicians to solve the problems with the settings which had prevented them from participating in the Superpole. In the free session Rolfo finished in seventeenth (1’44”944) while Aitchison (1’45”159) closed nineteenth. Tomorrow they will both start from the fifth row of the grid for the two eighteen lap races.

Superbike - qualifying 2 : 1) Haslam (BMW) - 2) Biaggi (Aprilia) - 3) Corser (BMW) - 4) Lascorz (Kawasaki) .........18) Rolfo (Kawasaki) - 20) Aitchison (Kawasaki)

Superbike - free practice: 1) Biaggi (Aprilia) - 2) Camier (Aprilia) - 3) Haslam (BMW) - 4) Corser (BMW) - 5) Laverty (Yamaha) .......... 17) Rolfo (Kawasaki) ........ 19) Aitchison (Kawasaki)

Superbike - Superpole: 1) Smrz (Ducati) - 2) Checa (Ducati) - 3) Rea (Honda) - 4) Haga (Aprilia) ........... 20) Rolfo (Kawasaki) - 21) Aitchison (Kawasaki)

Roberto Rolfo: “I’m satisfied with the work I have done today together with my technicians but of course I’m not satisfied with my result because I missed the Superpole and tomorrow I’ll start from the fifth row of the grid. This morning I was able to improve on my best lap time by half a second by using both my bikes and trying different settings. In the last few minutes of the session, after the long pause, I preferred not to change the tyres and tried to push very hard to improve my lap time. My bike is working better than yesterday and my pace is not so bad. Tomorrow’s races will be very difficult for me starting from the fifth row, but I’ll try my best to take a good result.”

Mark Aitchison: “Today we have finished our practices and qualifying in preparation for our races tomorrow. My team worked hard during the night to help improve the bike setup and we have found a direction that I think is good for consistency. In the race this is what I will be aiming for, a consistent lap time where I can maintain my pace and improve my position. We have some small changes to make overnight but I’m confident we can show good pace in the races”.

Sunshine and a dry track proved to be ideal conditions for Team Pedercini’s Superstock riders as they worked on their machines’ set-up. The three Kawasaki riders got straight down to business during morning’s free practice in order to find the best possible settings ahead of the afternoon’s second qualifying session. Staring reached eighth place (1’47”797) while Mercado was ninth (1’47”959) and Bussolotti (1’48”169) twelfth.
Bryan Staring (1’46”527) and Marco Bussolotti (1’47”013) will start tomorrow’s second round of the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup from the second row of the grid after setting respectively the fifth and eighth fastest time in this afternoon’s second qualifying session. Team-mate Leandro Tati Mercado (1’47”860) set the fourteenth fastest time for a fourth row start in tomorrow’s 11-lap encounter at the historic Monza circuit.

Marco Bussolotti: “After the qualifying session I’m more confident for tomorrow’s race. I’m pretty happy with my eighth place even though my rear tyre grip this afternoon was not enough to improve my best lap time. My race pace is strong and tomorrow I’ll be looking to make up positions as soon as the lights go out. Many thanks go to all my technicians for their hard work over these two days”.

Bryan Staring: “I’m happy because I did absolutely the best I could in the qualifying session. I gave everything I had and unfortunately I just missed out on a place on the front row but my position on the grid is better than the one I reached in Assen. For tomorrow it will be very important to start very fast from the second row and remain with the front group of riders. Thanks to everyone here in the team for their support over the weekend.”

Leandro Mercado: “I’m disappointed because I was not able to improve on my best lap time to reach a better position on the grid. Unfortunately I’m still suffering from some set up problems and during my best lap I found a lot of traffic. I need more grip on the rear tyre but the situation is better compared to this morning’s free practice. Tomorrow it will be a difficult race as always but for sure I want to do my best to reach a good result”.

Superstock 1000 FIM Cup - free practice: 1) Giugliano (Ducati) - 2) Zanetti (BMW) - 3)Barrier (BMW) - 4) Baroni (Ducati) ............ 8) Staring (Kawasaki) - 9) Mercado (Kawasaki) ............12) Bussolotti (Kawasaki).

Superstock 1000 FIM Cup - qualifying 2: 1) Giugliano (Ducati) - 2) Barrier (BMW) - 3) Magnoni (BMW) - 4) Zanetti (BMW) - 5) Staring (Kawasaki) ........... 8) Bussolotti (Kawasaki) ............ 14) Mercado (Kawasaki).
